Defining NUE: Turning Nitrogen into Yield
Colton describes Nitrogen Use Efficiency as, “how effectively basic crops take applied nitrogen to the grain.” In simple terms, NUE measures how much of the nitrogen you apply actually turns into yield. Nitrogen is one of the main drivers in achieving yield goals, and improving NUE can lead to cost savings while also optimizing yield potential.
Colton explains that in Minnesota the average nitrogen use efficiency ratio typically ranges from about 1 to 1.2 pounds of nitrogen per bushel of corn. For example, a grower targeting a 200-bushel corn yield would typically apply 200 to 240 pounds of actual nitrogen per acre. When nitrogen is not used efficiently, growers may be applying more nitrogen than the crop can utilize, leading to losses of $15 to $30 per acre. Even small improvements in efficiency can make a noticeable difference, and when those savings are scaled across an entire operation, the return on investment adds up quickly.
The Cost of Nitrogen Mismanagement
Nitrogen is one of the most expensive inputs in corn production, and according to Colton, it is also one of the most mismanaged.
“At the end of the day, I do think the average guy is applying too much nitrogen. We’re not being as efficient as we could be,” Colton explains.
While nitrogen is critical for achieving yield goals, applying more than the crop can use does not guarantee better results. Instead, it often leads to wasted dollars and long-term consequences beneath the soil surface.
Why Efficiency Matters Beyond This Season
Colton emphasizes that nitrogen inefficiency is not just a cost issue for this season. Excess nitrogen that the plant cannot utilize is prone to leaching, and that process creates a ripple effect.
“When you have excess nitrogen, it doesn’t stay put. When nitrogen leaches, it will pull calcium with it,” he says. Over time, calcium loss lowers soil pH, triggering other expenses growers know well. “So then, what do farmers do to raise their pH? They apply lime. It’s just a revolving cycle.”
From Colton’s perspective, overapplication becomes a hidden compounding cost. Growers spend more upfront on nitrogen than necessary, then spend again later to correct soil chemistry issues caused by that excess.
“If we can be more efficient with our nitrogen, we will have less nitrogen leaching and less calcium being pulled out, saving us money with lime application in the future,” shared Colton.
Efficiency, then, is not about cutting corners. It is about preventing unnecessary correction costs down the road while still supporting yield goals.
As Colton puts it, “nitrogen isn’t cheap,” and every pound needs to earn its place in the field.
How Do We Become More Efficient with Nitrogen?
Now you may ask, “How do we handle this issue and begin to become more efficient with nitrogen?” According to Colton, the answer starts with acknowledging that fields are not uniform, even when yield goals are treated that way.
“I guarantee, in fields you’ve got spots doing 250-bushel corn and spots doing 150,” he explains. When nitrogen is applied flat across those acres, some areas are under fertilized while others receive more than they can ever use. “We need to feed those 250-bushel spots for 250, not the 200 averages, because that’s where the money is made.”
Improving NUE means matching nitrogen rates to what each part of the field can realistically produce. Colton stresses that this is not just about reducing costs, but about improving performance where it counts.
“With flat-rate applications, realistically, you’re only hitting about 25 percent of the field accurately,” he says. “There are spots you’re throwing too much money at, and spots where there’s not enough there to feed the crop.”
Timing, Placement, and Application Strategy
Timing and application strategy are another major lever for improving efficiency. Colton is a strong believer in split applications, especially on lighter soil.
“I look at soil like a bowl,” he explains. “You can only fill it so full before stuff spills out.”
Applying all nitrogen upfront can exceed what the soil can hold, increasing the risk of loss before the crop ever has a chance to use it. If you put all your nitrogen up front, your plants will be taller early in the season and may have less nitrogen available during tassel and grain fill, which is when the plant takes up the most nitrogen. Splitting applications spreads that risk and improves the odds that each pound applied actually contributes to yield.
